IF YOU OWNED A BUSINESS, WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER TO BE “EXCELLENT SERVICE” FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS?
Let’s say that you have a house cleaning service. Excellent service could be making sure that everything is spotless. It could mean that you have a great attitude even while you are scrubbing their toilet. It could mean staying true to the price you gave, even if the work is more difficult than was expected.
All of these are examples of excellence, but I would like to suggest that there is more to excellence than that. Let’s use this humorous event that happened to me last week as I was cleaning carpets to illustrate my point….

I found this guy in an empty home about to be occupied by a new tenant. I thought to myself, “Is it real? Yep, it’s real; a lizard. What do I do with it? The new tenants won’t like this. I need to catch it and get rid of it.” My lightning fast mind concludes that I could scare it out of the balcony door. In reality, I’m avoiding picking it up by my hands for fear’s sake alone. When I tried to do this, it ran into the closet. After I scared it out of the closet, guess where it went…into my carpet buffer! Of all the places! If I turned on my buffer, the lizard would likely perish in a messy fashion all over the carpet.
WHAT DOES THIS STORY TEACH US ABOUT EXCELLENT SERVICE?
“Excellence is an Attitude of the Heart”
Excellence is an attitude of the heart. It’s a commitment to do the best you possibly can for your customers’ needs, given the situation, even if that means getting uncomfortable or getting over your fears in the process. I really, REGALY did not want to pick up the lizard with my hands at first even though I knew it was the right course of action. I knew it was in the best interest of my customer to get that lizard out of the house, so I overcame those fears.
Doing your job well, going above and beyond, being polite to every customer, and treating them how you want to be treated, are all examples of excellence. Ultimately, it’s an attitude of the heart that will even propel itself to pick up lizards if necessary.
When has the quest for excellence made you a stronger person?
My mission to do right by my customers helped me face my fear and solve a problem in an ethical way. We are sometimes tested in the least obvious of ways, and in this case I’m proud to have passed!
